Hiring a wedding photographer isn’t just another task to check off your to-do list—it’s a big decision. This person is going to be with you all day, from the quiet getting-ready moments to the last dance when your shoes are off and your cheeks hurt from smiling. They’ll be capturing memories you’ll look back on for decades (and maybe even show your grandkids one day), so yeah—it’s kind of a big deal.
But let’s be real: with so many photographers out there, how do you actually know who’s the right fit for your day? Gorgeous photos are a must, of course, but there’s a whole lot more that goes into it. Communication, experience, professionalism, and personality all play a huge role in making sure you feel comfortable and confident from the first inquiry to final delivery.
So before you hit that “Book Now” button, here are a few essential questions to ask—and why they matter.

First up: “What’s your experience with weddings like ours?”
This is such an important question, and it goes way beyond just geography. Whether you're eloping at a charming Charleston courthouse or throwing a blowout reception in the Lowcountry, it’s important that your photographer has been in similar settings before. I might be new to South Carolina, but I’ve photographed a lot of weddings—big ones, small ones, mountain-top elopements, backyard barbecues, you name it. What really matters is knowing how to handle the flow of a wedding day, roll with the unexpected (because there’s always something), and deliver consistent, beautiful photos no matter the venue, weather, or timeline quirks. If you’re planning a celebration that feels personal and real, there’s a good chance I’ve photographed something like it!
“What’s included in your package—and what’s not?”
This one’s big. The last thing you want is to assume you're getting 10 hours of coverage and an album, when you're actually getting 6 hours and a polite thumbs-up emoji. Ask about hourly limits, second shooters, travel fees, digital galleries, and any add-ons. I always make this super clear in my packages because transparency is everything.
“Can we see a full wedding gallery?”
Instagram is the highlight reel. You want to see the behind-the-scenes of a full day—the good light, the not-so-good light, and everything in between. A photographer should be able to deliver consistent, beautiful work from getting ready to grand exit.
“What’s your backup plan if something goes wrong?”
Nobody wants to talk about this, but… what happens if your photographer gets sick? Or if the camera decides to quit mid-ceremony? I bring backup gear, memory cards, and I have a trusted network of local photographers I can call if the world implodes. You deserve to know you’re covered no matter what.
“How do you handle family photos?”
Spoiler: this part of the day can be a little chaotic. A good photographer (hi, it’s me) will help you plan out a smooth list ahead of time, wrangle the right people, and make it as painless as possible. I know Aunt Carol will vanish for cocktail hour, and I know how to track her down.
And lastly—“Do we vibe?”
This one’s less of a question and more of a gut check. You want to feel comfortable around your photographer, because guess what? I’m going to be there when you're laughing, crying, fluffing your outfit, fixing your hair, possibly sweating through your fancy clothes. It’s a very intimate day, and chemistry matters.

At the end of the day, choosing your wedding photographer is about more than just loving their photos (though that part is pretty important). It’s about feeling heard, supported, and genuinely excited to have them around on one of the most meaningful days of your life. South Carolina has no shortage of beautiful venues and scenic backdrops—but what brings your wedding photos to life is you and the people you love. If you're looking for a photographer who’s experienced, down-to-earth, and fully invested in making your day stress-free and unforgettable, let’s talk. I’d love to hear about your plans, your vision, and your favorite snack (just kidding—but also, not really).
Reach out any time—I'll bring the camera and the calm energy.
